Firework Safety

Fireworks can be fun for families, especially on occasions like Bonfire Night, Diwali, and New Year’s Eve, but they can also cause injuries, especially to children. Public displays are generally safer than private parties, but if you're hosting your own, follow safety guidelines like the Firework Code, sparkler safety, and bonfire precautions.

Firework Code:

  • Only adults should handle fireworks.
  • Keep fireworks in a closed box and light them one at a time.
  • Stand back after lighting, and never return to a firework once lit.
  • Keep flames, including cigarettes, away from fireworks.
  • Avoid throwing or carrying fireworks in your pocket.
  • Don’t use petrol or paraffin on bonfires.

Sparkler Safety:

  • Sparklers can be dangerous and should not be given to children under five.
  • Always wear gloves, hold sparklers at arm’s length, and avoid waving them near others.
  • Dispose of used sparklers in cold water.

Bonfire Safety:

  • Supervise children and keep fires away from fences and play areas.
  • Never use flammable liquids to start a fire.
  • Have water nearby and pour water on the fire afterward.

Important Facts:

  • Fireworks and sparklers cannot be sold or carried by anyone under 18.
  • Setting off fireworks is restricted to certain hours on specific holidays.
  • In Northern Ireland, a license is required to buy or use fireworks.
  • For serious burns, call 999 immediately.
